🏛️ Pingyao Government Offices
A must-visit site to understand how local bureaucracy worked during the Ming and Qing dynasties. This complex served as the administrative center for over 500 years and is incredibly well-preserved.
It includes courtrooms, magistrate residences, and even an old prison. The Judgment Hall, featuring wax figures reenacting Qing-era trials, is particularly striking. You’ll also see torture devices once used to extract confessions—disturbing, but informative.
Sometimes, you can catch a live performance of a traditional Qing-style trial with costumed actors.
💵 Rishengchang Bank
Founded in 1823, this was the first official bank in China, revolutionizing the country’s financial system. Instead of transporting silver and coins—which was risky—Rishengchang introduced cheques and promissory notes (piaohao) for secure long-distance transactions.
The restored building is now a museum, showcasing original safes, ledgers, dormitories, and historical bank documents. The wooden plaque at the entrance, inscribed with 日昇昌 (Rishengchang), is the original 19th-century sign.

The wall is 6 km long, 10 meters high, and has 72 watchtowers—symbolically representing Confucius’ 72 disciples. It has a square layout with four main gates, one in each cardinal direction. You can walk part of the wall from South Gate (Nanmen), where you also purchase the tourist pass.
🎆 Every Saturday at 9:00 PM, there’s a fantastic light and mapping show at the South Gate. Sadly, it was canceled during our visit due to stormy weather. Note: the gate closes a bit before the show, so get there early to grab a spot!
🚄 How to Get to Pingyao
The fastest and most convenient way to reach Pingyao is by high-speed train. There are two train stations, depending on your route:
- Pingyao Gucheng Station: Serves high-speed trains (G & D) from cities like Beijing, Xi’an, Datong, or Taiyuan.
- Pingyao Railway Station: Closer to the old town, but only for slower K or T trains.
From Pingyao Gucheng, you can take a taxi or DiDi to the walled city. It shouldn’t cost more than 20 yuan.

🍜 Where to eat in Pingyao
Exploring the sights is just half the fun—trying local food is a must. Pingyao and the Shanxi province are known for bold flavors, artisanal black vinegar, handmade noodles and dumplings, and braised meats. Local specialties include:

- Pingyao niurou: Cured beef

We ate at Hong Wu Ji, a spacious multi-story restaurant with an inner courtyard. The staff was attentive, and everything was ordered via QR code on the Meituan app. We liked it so much we came back for dinner! Highlights:
Meat dumplings: Tasty, but huge portions—best for sharing (we got 25–30 in one plate!)
Guoyou (过油肉): Stir-fried pork with black fungus and veggies, mild and delicious
Sweet & sour meatballs: Crunchy outside, flavorful inside
Fried eggplant with honey & sesame: Hands down the best eggplant dish we’ve ever had
We also tried a local Pingyao beer—oddly fizzy with no foam, but surprisingly refreshing!
